Winter Walks and Wild Trails: Discover Nature in Cyprus

When you think of Cyprus, the first things that come to mind are beaches, sunbeds, and warm summer evenings. But during the winter, the island reveals another beautiful side—misty pine forests, trickling streams, snow-dusted mountains, and hidden nature trails that are ideal for hiking and exploring.

Whether you’re a seasoned trekker or just looking for a peaceful walk in the countryside, Cyprus in January offers cool, crisp air and scenic beauty without the crowds and you can base your trip with comfort and care at Louis Hotels in Paphos and Limassol.

Here are some of the best nature and hiking trails to explore this season.

  1. Artemis Trail – Troodos Mountains
  • Length: 7 km loop
  • Level: Easy to moderate
  • Starting point: Near Chionistra (Mount Olympus)

The Artemis Trail encircles the highest point in Cyprus, offering panoramic views of forested slopes and the coast on clear days. The path winds through black pine forests, past rare plants and rock formations, and is walkable even in light snow. In winter, it’s peaceful and atmospheric.

  1. Tzelefos Bridge Trail – Paphos Forest
  • Length: Various short trails (2–5 km)
  • Level: Easy
  • Highlight: Venetian stone bridge and river views

Hidden deep in the Paphos forest, Tzelefos Bridge is the most famous of the island’s Venetian bridges. Follow the trail alongside the Diarizos River under tall trees, where ferns, moss, and misty air create a magical atmosphere—wonderful in winter.

You can also combine it with nearby trails to Roudia, Skarfos, or Treis Elies for a full-day forest adventure.

  1. Omodos – Kelephos Loop
  • Length: 8–10 km
  • Level: Moderate
  • Start: Omodos village square

Combine nature with culture on a hike from Omodos, one of Cyprus’s most picturesque wine villages. The trail takes you past vineyards, old chapels, and views of the Troodos foothills—ideal for a post-hike wine tasting or lunch by the fire in one of the village taverns.

  1. Avakas Gorge – Akamas Peninsula
  • Length: 3 km (each way)
  • Level: Moderate
  • Access from: Paphos/Lara Bay area

One of the most stunning natural sites in Cyprus, Avakas Gorge features towering limestone cliffs, narrow passageways, and a trickling stream you’ll cross multiple times. January brings a touch of water and green growth, making the landscape come alive. Wear good shoes—this one can get muddy!

  1. Caledonia Waterfalls Trail – Platres
  • Length: 3 km return
  • Level: Moderate with some uphill
  • Start: Between Platres and Troodos

One of the most popular waterfall hikes in Cyprus, the Caledonia Trail is a beautiful shaded route that follows a mountain stream to a 12-meter waterfall. In winter, the water flows strongly, and the walk is cool and invigorating. Combine it with coffee in the nearby village of Platres.
