Retsina: Greece’s Most Distinctive Traditional Wine

Discovering a destination begins with discovering its flavors.

And guests of Louis Hotels in Cyprus and Greece are invited to experience authentic, local tastes — from traditional dishes to time-honored wines. Today, we will introduce you to Retsina—a traditional wine with unique character and centuries-old heritage.

What Is Retsina?

Retsina is a traditional Greek white (and sometimes rosé) wine infused with pine resin. Its aroma is fresh, slightly herbal, and unmistakably Mediterranean. The resin imparts a subtle pine scent and a crisp, refreshing finish.

This distinctive style makes Retsina unlike any other wine in the world.

A Wine with Ancient Roots

The origins of Retsina date back over 2,000 years. In ancient Greece, wine was stored in clay amphorae sealed with pine resin to prevent air from spoiling it. Over time, the resin didn’t just preserve the wine — it became part of its flavor profile.

Even after storage methods evolved, the taste of resin remained popular. Today, Retsina continues this tradition intentionally, keeping a link between modern Greece and its ancient past.

Production

Modern Retsina is typically made from the Savatiano grape, though other varieties may also be used. During fermentation, a small amount of pine resin is added. Once the desired flavor is achieved, the resin is removed, leaving behind a clean, aromatic wine with hints of pine and citrus.

The result is dry, crisp, and perfect for pairing with Mediterranean cuisine.

What to Pair It With

Retsina shines when enjoyed alongside traditional Greek and Cypriot dishes. It pairs beautifully with:

  • Grilled fish and seafood
  • Meze platters with olives, feta, and dips
  • Souvlaki and grilled meats
  • Fried halloumi
  • Light summer salads with olive oil and herbs

Its refreshing acidity balances salty and savory flavors, making it a favorite choice at seaside tavernas.

A Taste of Authentic Greece

Retsina is more than just a wine — it’s an experience. It carries the scent of pine forests, the warmth of shared meals, and the simplicity of Greek hospitality. Make sure you try it next time you visit Greece or Cyprus.
